I was trying to upload a .tar.gz file. Also .tgz files should be allowed. Can we have the fireflux dataset please, with the metadata as above? [[User:Jmandel|Jmandel]] 23:05, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

:Wikis are not a good platform for a data repository. Normally the file size limit is 2Mb, I have increased it to 50Mb, but beyond that there is risk of the browser or server timing out during transfer. Http is not a good protocol for uploading large files because during transfer the browser is just hanging and gets no feedback until the transfer is complete. I have added '.tgz' and '.gz' to the allowed file types so you can try uploading one of those if it's small enough. I'll see about finding a place for the datasets, but people may have to rely on me to put them online.

:Jan, I see that we do have a Datasets repository set up at SCI. I will have to place the files into it myself, however. I have re-added the link to the FireFlux data. I have no idea about the metadata. Janice gave me the file so perhaps she could add more info about it. [[Fire_Flux_Dataset]]

Fire Flux Dataset

Hi Erik, Janice noted earlier the Clemens BAMS 2007 Fireflux paper is copyrighted and we had to take it out the Joomla part of the site. Can you take it off the wiki also, please? Please replace by link to a version on publisher's or author's site if available. I am glad that we have this dataset here, but under what license and what is the original URL? Perhaps we should force selection of license and source in the File page. This dataset file does not show under files and it does not have a File page, how did you upload it? I tried to upload some datasets before but it wouldn't let me upload a .zip file. Thanks! Jmandel 05:53, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Jan,
I noticed that there was a link to the BAMS article on the Joomla site, but it was bad. I had forgotten that it was supposed to be removed so I fixed it. Then I migrated the content to the wiki site. I did not upload it to the wiki, just linked to the file in Joomla. I can fix the wiki to allow .zip uploads if you wish. I'll see if I can find the proper link to the publisher.
Erik

Yes, I figured that. I thought we removed all links to the copyvio file but apparently not. It may be best to configure the wiki to allow .zip files. Do you think it would be suitable for a data repository? With each dataset I'd like to have some metadata information, at least original URL, description, author, license, and what software it opens with. Thanks! Jmandel 22:53, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

The wiki should let you upload a .zip file if it's not too large. Let me know exactly what error you get and I'll see if I can fix it. We've had some issues related to our load balancer lately that may have been the cause.

Wikis are not a good platform for a data repository. Normally the file size limit is 2Mb, I have increased it to 50Mb, but beyond that there is risk of the browser or server timing out during transfer. Http is not a good protocol for uploading large files because during transfer the browser is just hanging and gets no feedback until the transfer is complete.
