July 19: Creating SOCKS proxy
- In Firefox->Preferences->Network->Settings->Manual Proxy Configuration: Enter in SOCKS Host box
127.0.0.1
and the port (say,8080
) - Connect to the host you want to use as proxy by
ssh -D 8080 user@hosts
and leave the ssh session open
That is all, it's really so simple! The proxy works also for https, video streaming, etc. For more details see http://magellan.nersc.gov -> using magellan -> creating a SOCKS proxy and this guide.
For other browsers than Firefox the settings may be similar. But proxy settings in some browsers integrated into the OS may affect all network connections, not just that browser... and when you do the proxy to work, the IT services know all where you are going... so I rather use Firefox.

July 24: Math display in Wikipedia
- in My Preferences -> Appearance select Skin = Vector, Math= Leave it as TeX. Save. On the Skin = Vector line, click "custom Java script"
- This will put you in edit mode for
Special:MyPage/vector.js
. Create the file with the contents
mathJax={}; mathJax.fontDir="http://cdn.mathjax.org/mathjax/latest/fonts"; importScript('User:Nageh/mathJax.js');
See Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Mathematics/Archive/2011/Jul#MathJax. Unfortunately you need to be logged in so this will not work on a page you arrive at through a link.
- No longer works, MathJax is now one of the options you turn on in your account preferences. Jmandel 07:48, 16 August 2012 (MDT)
